The Journey, Long in the Making — Nalin’s Baggage to & from Oxford

We asked our scholars to go back to the moment they packed their luggage in preparation for their journey to Oxford. But instead of clothes and books, we asked them to think about the stories, people, memories, hopes, and all immaterial things that they would put inside. We also wanted to know what they would probably like to add to their baggage when leaving Oxford. Find other stories in this series here.

The precipice of the journey to Oxford was a space filled with incredible joy and pressure. Pursuing an international and world-class Master’s degree has been a goal, or rather an integral step in reaching one of my life goals, for about eight years now. To have realised this goal through an Oxford-Weidenfeld and Hoffmann Scholarship felt almost surreal. With this almost dream-like path laid before me, I felt the immense gravity of it all.

The weight of making the most of the opportunity was eased by recalling the shared nature of the achievement and the years of effort and failures; this is the baggage that will see me through. I naturally started with my essentials, my freedom fighter parents who have always ensured that I could follow my passions. Knowing that they believe in me and are proud of me is my confidence. I then packed my treasured memories with friends and family. They never fail to put a smile on my face when I need it the most.

Finally, I looked back on my own contribution to this achievement. For the longest time, I have dreamed of “saving the world” through the sciences, specifically through science that integrates social and environmental needs, hence my arrival at water science. For this goal, I was able to dedicate myself for years and push through many failures. This fact reminds me that no matter where I am, even at Oxford, I will never give up.

While the baggage I have brought with me is already more than I could have hoped, I am also fortunate that I will be able to add even more thanks to this opportunity. I look forward to forming a true sense of community with my fellow scholars, individuals who have and will continue to change the world for the better. They will inspire me forever. I am also excited by the prospect of becoming a holistic water practitioner and leader with an understanding and appreciation of the full spectrum of water challenges and solutions.
