My Journey at the Vis Moot Competition

On 31 March 2023, the prestigious Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot) took place in Vienna, bringing together law students from all around the world. The Vis Moot, known as the ‘Olympics for law students,’ focuses on international commercial arbitration and aims to foster the study and development of this vital branch of international dispute resolution. As a participant representing the University of Oxford, I had the incredible opportunity to not only test my legal skills but also network with my peers and learn from seasoned practitioners in the field of international arbitration throughout the incredible journey in Vienna.

Throughout the oral proceedings, I was astounded by the depth of knowledge and passion displayed by all fellow competitors. The seven-day competition was both a rigorous and exhilarating intellectual challenge. We had to conduct thorough research on a wide range of topics within a limited timeframe, as well as practice pleading skills and manners to persuade the arbitral tribunal in a one-hour proceeding. Drawing on our solid legal knowledge and preparation, we were able to meet these challenges head-on and ultimately emerge stronger as a team. We were elated to receive honourable mentions of the Werner Melis Award for Best Memorandum for Respondent. This achievement was a testament to our dedication, hard work, and the unwavering support from our coach and the University of Oxford.

During the Vis Moot competition, I had the pleasant surprise of encountering old friends from around the world. It was heart-warming to see how this event united all young lawyers passionate about international arbitration, transcending geographical boundaries and cultural differences. As I walked through the competition venues, I recognised numerous familiar faces whom I met through internet forums, study groups, internships, and academic conferences in the previous covid years. It was a testament to how the Vis Moot competition not only brought together young lawyers with shared career passions but also strengthened connections among us.

The Vis Moot journey has undoubtedly played a significant role in facilitating my legal career in international arbitration. It provided me with a unique platform to develop essential skills such as legal research, drafting, and oral advocacy. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent the University of Oxford, an achievement that will always be a cherished memory of my time in law school. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to WHT, which provided scholars with a supportive platform to delve into our professional interests, and generous financial assistance that enabled us to partake in academic events.
